The Indiana Chapter of the Energy Services Coalition (ESC) recognized Johnson Controls and the City of Evansville with the award for “Outstanding Project of the Year” during a ceremony on April 17, 2019 at the Indiana State House.
Through an Energy Savings Performance Contract (ESPC) with Johnson Controls, the City of Evansville is taking steps to address its aging infrastructure, reduce operating and maintenance costs, improve service to its taxpayers and enhance sustainability. The ESPC allowed Evansville’s city leaders to invest $39 million in much needed infrastructure to advance the Mayor’s Smart City 2.0 Initiative, a cost offset by an annual savings/revenues of $3.1 million a year over the next 20 years. These benefits are more than enough to self-fund the program meaning no property tax increases, TIF funds, or rate increases.

Johnson Controls helped Evansville implement technologies that will streamline operations, save costs and improve the delivery of services to ratepayers. The projects include the replacement and automation of 65,000 water meters, an AMI network to not only read meters but to also support other municipal applications, a renewable energy project using treatment plant methane, and a centrifuge to reduce hauling costs for sludge. Conventional efficiency scopes – such as lighting, HVAC, controls and power-factor correction – were also implemented which allowed the City to reduce its energy use by 30 percent and solid waste by 20 percent at the city’s wastewater treatment plant. Through the first two years of tracked and validated performance, the program is substantially exceeding expectations.
