Keeping Hawaii's buildings safe and secure

On February 14, Johnson Controls hosted a Technology Symposium in Honolulu, HI, to provide customers with a deeper understanding of how advancements with building technologies and solutions can enhance safety, security, energy usage, and simplify facility operations. Subject matter experts from Johnson Controls led a series of educational discussions that focused on emerging trends and considerations for implementing smart security, fire and life-safety and building automation solutions.

The seminar was a great opportunity to discuss the relevant and current concerns of facility managers and showcase how Johnson Controls can help address our customers pressing security, safety and building needs.

The event began with a welcome greeting from our Hawaii sales manager, Robert Garringer who spoke on the history of innovation and the story of Tyco SimplexGrinnell and Johnson Controls. The day continued with educational sessions on the following topics:

  • Fire and Life Safety: Rodger Reiswig, Vice President of Industry Relations, and Tom Connell, Senior Product Manager, focused on maintaining code compliance and how to leverage smart technology to meet today’s building safety and operations, the importance of implementing active shooter response technology and the benefits of addressable notification technology.
  • Security: Brian Lyle, Business Development Manager, Security, Business Solutions North America, led a discussion about the particulate needs that mass notification addresses, including using technology and current infrastructure to minimize cost and flexibility in deployment. He also spoke with customers about cutting edge security technology that is bolstering a secure environment today and in the future.
  • Building Automation Systems: Richard Fellows, BAS and Controls Channel Account Manager, took a deeper dive into the evolution of the Johnson Controls Metasys Building Automation System to provide instant access to data utilizing IP based controllers and various Ethernet wiring topologies. Brody McMurtry, Energy Solutions Account Executive, highlighted a local case study based on Johnson Controls work at the University of Hawaii to increase efficiency and renewable energy.

The event was a success with over 100 customers in attendance, including Hawaii State Hospital, University of Hawaii at Manoa, Honolulu Fire Department and Kaiser Permanente. The seminar was a great opportunity to discuss the relevant and current concerns of facility managers and showcase how Johnson Controls can help address our customers pressing security, safety and building needs.
