Integrated Fire Alarm System for an East Coast Museum

By Vero Janin-Trudeau, Vice President Fire Service Operations, Johnson Controls

Large facilities with high traffic volumes need updated fire detection systems to ensure the safety of all building occupants. This east coast museum wanted to increase the fire protection and detection capabilities of their existing fire alarm system without replacing it entirely. They contacted Johnson Controls to develop a plan to install a future-proof system that provided clear evacuation measures and improved audio and visual capabilities to increase awareness and response time during a fire emergency.

Future-proof system for improved awareness and response time

The Johnson Controls team worked in collaboration with the museum team and a mechanical engineering firm to create a cohesive plan that would lend itself to the existing system. The three groups communicated to align the customer’s design vision with the existing infrastructure. Once the design was agreed upon, the Johnson Controls team created a customized plan that would work best for the customer’s specified needs.

The museum now enjoys the added benefit of cost and time savings with the ability to manage the systems remotely as well as continuity in their existing fire alarm system by expanding rather than replacing.

With this plan, the Johnson Controls team began ramping up the museum’s older fire alarm system. The updates included the installation of a suite of Simplex technologies and services with integrated voice and audio signaling capabilities. The platforms are structured to improve serviceability, reduce cost and save time by allowing employees to manage the system remotely. True Alert addressable notifications ensure everyone’s safety with a true alarm smoke detection, and speaker and strobe light alert system to notify all occupants of an emergency. Employees and visitors alike can rely on the speed, flexibility and resilience of the updated system.

Improved serviceability, reduced cost and enhanced response

The result? A fire alarm system that works more efficiently to quickly determine fire and emergency situations, driving a faster response time from the local fire department. The museum now enjoys the added benefit of cost and time savings with the ability to manage the systems remotely as well as continuity in their existing fire alarm system by expanding rather than replacing.
