Campus security systems have made incredible strides in data-driven innovation in recent years, allowing higher education institutions to keep students, staff and visitors safer than ever. For one northeastern university, this goal was out of reach due to its main campus’ outdated security system whose software was unable to integrate with new technologies. The system was built on a single server with limited bandwidth, while blind spots in the system left occupants vulnerable. They needed a unified and holistic solution that would allow all buildings to be managed from a single point.

As a result, university leaders were ready to upgrade their campus security systems to provide the most comprehensive and forward-thinking protection possible.

Security updates made through expert project management

The Johnson Controls team of experts quickly got to work identifying upgrades that would bring the school’s security system up to date. This included updating the outdated server to an advanced main server and four satellite servers, which were then integrated with the university’s robust data center. After upgrading to the C-Cure 9000 security system, they were able to implement facial recognition solutions and wireless locks throughout campus. These touchless technologies add an extra level of protection to the university’s facilities while enabling easy and streamlined movement throughout the campus. In addition, they implemented every perimeter door with an interior and exterior camera to minimize blind spots.

Throughout the duration of the project, Johnson Controls implemented a consistent communication process with stakeholders to ensure alignment on project progress.

A safe and modernized campus experience for students and staff

The entire campus is now safer, modernized and equipped to support future growth. By upgrading to a powerful new security system on multiple servers, the university can continue to build on its security offerings in the future. Placing all buildings on the same system allows their managers to monitor and maintain them together, providing comprehensive insight into campus safety. And by moving away from traditional key locks in favor of touchless access controls, the school will save capital in the long-term, and the student experience is enhanced by easy and secure access to buildings. The new system allows HR information to be automatically uploaded to the access control system, creating a streamlined onboarding process for new staff.
