In the latest episode of the Stacey on IoT podcast, ranked by Listen Score in the top 0.5% most popular shows out of 2,874,390 podcasts globally, Johnson Controls Chief Technology Officer Vijay Sankaran discusses the transformation of the world’s buildings estate through adoption of advanced technologies at scale. The podcast, led by technology sector opinion leader Stacey Higginbotham, a former senior writer at Fortune, sees a regular stream of industry leaders and pioneers sharing their knowledge and insight into the future of areas such as AI, IoT and semiconductors.

“Given that buildings account for almost 40% of global greenhouse gases, boosting energy efficiency, reducing costs and minimizing carbon emissions using technology, such as OpenBlue, will have the greatest impact.”

— Johnson Controls Chief Technology Officer Vijay Sankaran

Sankaran shares his thoughts on the rapid evolution of smart buildings, and Johnson Controls’ approach to tackling customers’ challenges such as how to solve for net zero: “Buildings are our business, so we saw the need for a company like Johnson Controls - with such a rich tradition around innovation and excellence in the buildings space - to really help support the goals and aspirations of our customers as well as the broader industry.”

He underlines the comprehensive engineering solutions available to move the buildings sector forward, including a new era of remote diagnostics allowing for faster, more efficient and more effective responses to the operational management of equipment. Also, Sankaran emphasizes the importance of prioritizing people-focused outcomes, for example increasing the health of buildings for occupants in areas such as airflow.

He noted: “We’ve taken a very distinctly outside-in view, which is: what aspiration and challenges our customers have and how we can solve them through data analytics, AI, digital experiences and digital solutions in an overall software platform.”

As for “low-hanging fruit”, Sankaran reminds listeners that Johnson Controls: “just launched a new solution called OpenBlue Net Zero Advisor, something to help companies get started. […] Within a couple of days, you’re up and running and can see what is contributing to your Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions.” By having a baseline, customers improve their energy efficiency and emissions in their journey to reach net zero decarbonization goals.
