Can less really be more? We recently released our 2025 Sustainability Report, spotlighting the success of technology and services that boost operating efficiency while cutting emissions from the built environment.

This serves to remind us of the strategic value of sustainability in buildings and how key innovations and initiatives can deliver energy efficiency and decarbonization. Here are three spotlights:

1. Gaining competitive advantage through strategic sustainability
For many organizations, buildings are at the heart of their sustainability actions. From office buildings and schools to hospitals and production plants, buildings are responsible for nearly 40% of global carbon emissions. As a result, they also represent some of the fastest and most cost-effective paths for meeting global climate targets while realizing new business value. Discover how we help customers lower energy costs for a healthier bottom line here >

2. Putting technology to work
Worried about resources? Sit back and let data, software and AI do the heavy lifting. Our cloud-based technology provides all the data needed for building optimization. Just ask Standard Chartered Bank, which leveraged Johnson Controls OpenBlue to reduce energy by 10-12% across its Asia Pacific locations, reporting more than $250,000 in cost savings in just six months. Learn how you can take realistic steps with OpenBlue Enterprise Manager to track, reduce and control energy use while accelerating progress toward carbon reduction goals here >

3. Delivering practical, cost-saving solutions
We’re committed to providing bottom-line business value through cost-saving solutions that also accelerate climate action. The West Plains Housing Authority (WPHA) in Missouri has teamed up with us on a comprehensive modernization project that seeks to enhance 273 low-income housing units, while reducing carbon emissions by 32% and water consumption by 40%. The projected savings? Almost $200,000 annually. Learn more about the project here >

Did you know? In our performance contracting business alone, we’ve helped customers reduce carbon emissions by 41 million metric tons to date and are set to deliver nearly $9 billion in energy and operational savings, driving business outcomes and a competitive advantage through strategic sustainability.

As we deliver these results for our customers and partners, we continue to achieve, and surpass, our own targets and milestones. We’ve met or exceeded our commitments in our 2025 sustainability goals in multiple categories, including a 56% reduction in greenhouse gas intensity and a 28% reduction in energy intensity since 2017. We’re proud to be counted among the most sustainable companies in the world and we’re excited to put our technology to work to drive outsized results for profitability and the planet.
