AARHUS, Denmark, 26th September, 2024 – Johnson Controls (NYSE: JCI), the global leader in smart, healthy and sustainable buildings, today announced a significant expansion at its Holme heat pump and chiller facility in the region of Aarhus, Denmark. The development will allow the company to produce and test larger, high-capacity commercial and industrial heat pumps to meet growing demand from customers across the globe. The investment is expected to create over 100 new jobs and is scheduled for completion by early 2026.
The investment will result in an additional 2300 square meters of production capacity and an 1800 square meter customer and test center including a state-of-the-art simulation of the customer environment. As part of the investment, existing buildings will also be modernized and upgraded with new production equipment and technology.
“This important milestone reinforces our commitment to a sustainable future while boosting local economic growth,” said Benthe Klokkerholm, vice president, Manufacturing Operations HVAC/R, EMEA. “Heat pumps are a critical technology for the energy transition typically using a third of the energy of conventional heating systems while reducing carbon emissions. The investment allows us to advance our technology leadership in key vertical markets such as district heating and cooling, data centers, food and beverage, and life sciences, and support our customers as they scale up their sustainability initiatives.”
The Holme plant produces customized Johnson Controls’ Sabroe-branded heat pumps and chillers as well as remanufactured, aftermarket and marine spare parts. The technologies utilize ultra-low Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerants such as ammonia, CO2 or propane, compliant with new EU regulations coming into force from 2027 and 2030. Today it supplies primarily to district heating and food and beverage customers and procures 100% of its electricity from renewable energy sources further helping customers to meet their sustainability goals.
The plant was established by Thomas Sabroe in 1897 in Aarhus, and since then the compressor manufacturing has developed into a global brand providing cutting edge, sustainable heating and refrigeration solutions. It was acquired by Johnson Controls in 2005.
“This expansion is a proud moment for many of our employees that have been part of our family for several generations. We want to take this opportunity to thank our teams, customers, partners and suppliers all over the world for choosing Johnson Controls as their trusted partner — we remain fully committed to continuously developing solutions that meet both business and climate goals,” continued Klokkerholm.
Johnson Controls will showcase its HVAC and refrigeration solutions at the Chillventa show in Nürnberg, Germany from Oct. 8-10. The exhibit will be located in Hall 7, Stand 7-240.
The company is committed to creating intelligent solutions that help businesses and communities thrive, paving the way for a greener future. It was named to to the 2023 Fortune Change the World list for its innovative and transformative heat pump technology.
