Johnson Controls Robotic Sponsorship Program Guidelines

In schools where Johnson Controls employees volunteer, Johnson Controls will consider annual sponsorships to elementary, middle and high school robotics teams in the area of FIRST Robotics subject to available funds.

Guidelines:

  • Only schools with Johnson Controls employees serving as volunteers are eligible. Johnson Controls volunteers can serve in any capacity with the program—coach or chaperone, for example, or have a volunteer leadership position with the school that oversees or drives the program. Sponsorship amounts will take into consideration the level of volunteerism by the employee, as tracked in our internal volunteer system of MyGiving. Please note volunteer service by employees can result in $10/hour contribution from Johnson Controls in honor of employees’ time.
  • School personnel (or robotics team members, under the direction of school personnel) should apply for the sponsorship, not the Johnson Controls employee. Apply here.
  • The entity listed on the application must be registered in Johnson Controls Benevity system. For many public and charter schools, this will be the Foundation supporting the school, rather than the school itself. Private schools are often listed on their own. It is incumbent on the robotics program leadership to align with the nonprofit entity listed on the application to transfer funding, if needed. Check the Benevity site to see if your nonprofit organization (called cause) is registered. Most nonprofit 501c3 organizations in the U.S. are already in the system, and many global organizations are listed as well.
  • Public, private and charter schools globally are eligible for the sponsorship, within the funding parameters noted in #3. Home school or other teams are eligible if they work with an accompanying eligible nonprofit organization.
  • Funding may be used for anything connected to the program, but most often is used for the tools and supplies to create the robot.
  • Funding levels are up to $1000 for teams involved in FIRST LEGO League and FIRST Tech Challenge and up to $3000 for teams involved in FIRST Robotics Competition. Funding is evaluated on factors listed on the application form, including number of students in the program and service of underrepresented student groups. Up to two teams per school can apply for sponsorship, with a cap of $6000 per school. The sponsorship review committee reserves the right to determine appropriate funding levels.
  • Teams may apply for one sponsorship per year, unless their team advances to a regional or national competition, in which case they can apply for a second sponsorship of up to $2,000. All funding is limited each year.
  • If funding is provided, Johnson Controls logo should be used on the robot or promotional displays associated with the robot. A logo will be sent to schools who receive the sponsorship.
  • Johnson Controls asks that coaches obtain permission from parents to use photos of the students for use on Johnson Controls internal or external website, and to send these photos and stories about teams’ progress to: CORP-Community.Involvement@jci.com
  • Decisions on funding are anticipated to be made within 20 days of submissions. Once funding is approved, it will be disbursed within 90 days by Johnson Controls vendor, America Online Giving Foundation, with a reference to Johnson Controls. Entities set up to receive electronic fund transfer (EFT) will receive the funding in that manner.
